Another Dam
The Army Corps of Engineers plans to build yet another dam on the already dying Colorado River. However, the Colorado Front Range isn’t the only contributing factor to it’s decline. Living on the Colorado Front Range, I know that I directly have an impact on the Colorado River. However, I don’t have an HOA that demands I keep my grass green. I also do my best to only water when it needs it. (If it were my own house and I weren’t renting, I would have rocks and native plants in my front yard. The case in point is that HOA’s don’t give a damn about saving water. All they care about is making sure everyone has the exact same yard, grass height, and most importantly that their members have GREEN grass.
Other Cities to Blame?
Beyond the Front Range though, cities like Las Vegas and Los Angeles come to mind about wasting water. I once heard a quote that “even the water commutes to L.A.” I wish I had a water comparison for Denver, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas. Let’s think for a second about where Las Vegas is situated. IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DESERT. How many casinos have fountains that spray misted water into the air so that it evaporates IMMEDIATELY? I’ve never been to Vegas, but I can imagine that its quite a few. Talk about a blatant waste of water! Not to mention the green grass that they have to keep green as well.
Save the Colorado River
This may have sounded like I am defending the Front Range’s water usage. Let me just say that I am not. I absolutely despise the fact that water destined for the Pacific Ocean has to be pumped over the Continental Divide to feed the growing metropolis of Denver and it’s suburbs. I don’t agree with it at all. Unfortunately, there is no end in sight for the development along the Front Range. New condos and apartment complexes are being built daily. From a transplant that’s lived in Colorado for the better part of 12 years, STOP MOVING HERE, you’re literally killing our beautiful State and our name sake river. If you do move here, be conscientious of your water usage and help save the Colorado River.
I’ve been to Vegas a few times for work. The Bellagio is the worst with their fountains, though I don’t remember much green grass.
It’s sad though, how people move to a state for its beauty and end up contributing to its destruction
